FROM GRASS TO FOOD PACKAGING

Coolity is using readily available and cheap raw materials for compostable packaging

The Coolity story began in 2017 when the company’s founder, Anna María Pétursdóttir, started her entrepreneurial project in the sustainable cooling box field. It started with the question: “Why are we still shipping fresh fish in single-use plastic foam, when nature offers better solutions?”  Anna María has roots in both the arts and business, and a passion for sustainable innovation. Drawing inspiration from her family’s legacy in natural and circular industries, she set out to build more than just a product—she built a mission.

Building on her management experience in different industries such as in Coca-Cola in Iceland, Central Bank of Iceland, and PwC she wanted to start this venture to develop and market a new eco-friendly cooling box for the transport of fish.

Anna María’s bachelor’s degree was in handcraft- and art teaching from the University of Iceland and her master degree where in Occupational Psychology from  University of Hertfordshire and a master degree in Finance from Bifröst University.

Over the initial years of Coolity, Anna María sought support from her colleagues she worked with and Research and Science Institutes i.g. Fraunhofer a leading applied research organisation based in Germany.  From 2022 Coolity has enjoyed the service of  Danish Technological Institute that emphasis on creating ready technology solutions that addresses the specific needs of businesses in developing the Coolity box.   Anna María’s  colleagues includes her husband PhD Arnar Bjarnason and later PhD Sveinn Margeirsson took part in the journey.
